Giambattista Valli Fall 2011 Collection

Girl with a Red Dress.

The inspiration for this collection was a contemporary take on Vermeer's famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring," and Flemish still life paintings. It took a bit of squinting but we finally got the connection with the strong lines and the play of light and dark occasionally broken up by pops of bright color. The clean architectural lines enhanced by the use of color remind us a bit of Jil Sander; a very modern but vibrant look. We really like this collection. We think it's the best GV effort in a long time. We really appreciate that it runs the gamut from clean, minimalist looks, to exuberant gowns, ruffles and flounces, and sharp, graphic prints. It could be argued that the collection is all over the place, but we can see just enough cohesion so that it hangs together. We love the red gown above, as well as the black one that closes out the collection. We can't really get behind those truly odd waist ruffles and flounces, though. Still, there's so much here to like that we just skip past them and ooh and ahh over our favorites.
